A 46 year old Nepalese woman who was admitted to a hospital in Dubai anonymously in an unconscious state some months ago, has recuperated after undergoing a brain surgery but has lost her memory, making it difficult for the hospital authorities to locate her family, employer or friends.
Yam Kumari Thapa speaks fluent Arabic, Nepalese and also Hindi but says the only memory she has now is that she has a son.
The hospital had discharged Thapa a week ago but since she had no place to go, they kept her in a ward and contacted a social worker to take up her cause.
Social worker Laila Abu Bakar is now seeking help from the public as well as Nepalese embassy in Abu Dhabi to help reunite Thapa with her family, friends or employer who can give her whereabouts.
Abu Baker said she would be bringing Thapa to her place till the time her relatives are found. Speaking to Khaleej Times, she said: "I hope someone comes forward and takes her responsibility. But till the time that happens, I will keep her in my house and also meanwhile visit the Nepalese embassy in Abu Dhabi to see if they can help locate her family. I am ready to even take her to Nepal, once I get to know her address and maybe get in touch with her family."
"I think she must have been employed in some local Emirati household as she speaks fluent Arabic and that too with Emirati dialect. But she doesn't remember anything about Dubai or her employer. The only thing she says repeatedly is name of her native country Nepal and that she has one son. That is all she remembers."
Abu Bakar said that the woman's passport says she came to the UAE in 2014 on a house maid visa issued in Dubai.
According to Thapa's medical reports, she was brought to the emergency room with history of vomiting and on a coma scale 3/5 in which she was given mechanical ventilation. Her CT scan showed right frontal intracerebral haematoma and intraventricular haemmorhage extension. A procedure called Burr Hole ventricular puncture was conducted on her and stayed in ICU for some days until she got stable and moved into a general ward.
Thapa's condition is now stable and she has gained consciousness, however, still suffers from bouts of headache, fever and pain and is taking medication for that.
Abu Bakar has made an appeal to the public and authorities to help find friends or family members of Thapa so she can be sent back home.
