Adan Waqar from Lahore, Pakistan has been in Dubai for over a year now. And though there are similarities between Dubai and his homecountry, he still finds things overwhelming in the UAE. "I work with so many different nationalities here that the diversity is still a shock. I am still adjusting but I am out of my shell and I have made a few friends. Prejudices aside, I now have more Indian friends than Pakistani friends here."
Comparing his hometown to Dubai, he said: "Lahore and Dubai are similar but different in many ways. Back home, every day was a new story. If you asked me for an experience to share, I wouldn't be able to tell you one because there are too many. Lahore is slow paced whereas Dubai is the complete opposite."
Waqar's routine is the same everyday: work and gym. In his free time, he helps his friends with accounting and is presently taking driving lessons to get his licence.
Talking about his interest in numbers, Waqar, who works at a law firm as an accountant, said: "I have always been interested in numbers. Even in school I enjoyed doing calculations. The person who inspired me to become an accountant was my uncle. When I was quite young, I would see him studying continuously for long hours and his hard did finally pay off. My uncle went on to become a CA and it completely turned around his life. Back then, he wasn't financially stable but after becoming a CA, he is doing very well in life. I want to do the same, turn my life around and Dubai has given me this opportunity."
"Everyone has to start somewhere and that somewhere is always the bottom of the ladder, I will work my way up. I believe that as long I have the will to do it, I will get there even if the path is unfamiliar and I will make my family proud."
"When I was 16, I had a different dream. I wanted to become a cricketer. A batsman, to be more precise. I joined a cricket club and competed with other clubs. But after two years I decided to do ACCA and gave up on that dream. I wonder what my life would be like if I continued to pursue a career in cricket. Maybe I would become part of the national team."
