In the Chair: History is made, Dr Amal Abdullah Juma Karam Al Qubaisi is speaker

Political reforms begin with empowerment of every section of society. Democratic institutions are being built, and women are being place in positions of responsibility. That's why the elevation of Dr Amal Abdullah Juma Karam Al Qubaisi to the post of Speaker of the Federal National Council therefore came as no surprise to us. We called it a 'historic' appointment as she is the first woman to be elected to the FNC since 1971 and is also the first woman speaker of the Council.

With a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from UAE University, and a Master's Degree and PhD from the University of Sheffield in the UK, she has worked closely with the United Nations heritage agency, on conservation projects. She was earlier First Deputy Speaker of the federal legislative body.
Women in the UAE have been encouraged and empowered since the foundation of the state. This policy is spearheaded by the country's leadership and backed by the UAE Constitution, which guarantees equal rights for men and women in accordance with the precepts of Islam.
As a result, the role of women in society has evolved considerably over the years. Today, the economic and social benefits of diversity are universally recognised and embraced and women are viewed as partners in achieving sustainable development.
Emirati women are well represented in all sectors, including the political arena, diplomatic corps, judiciary and the commercial sector. Three of the UAE's ambassadors, one Consul-General and the UAE's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York are women. Four women have been appointed as judges, two as public prosecutors and 17 as assistant public prosecutors and marriage officials.
Women also serve in the armed forces (one at Brigadier level), customs and police, according to Wam.
