Hundreds of Indian workers gathered in Dubai's Al Quoz area to be part of the 14th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas on Monday. This was the first time that blue collar workers in the UAE were included in such a celebration.
"Definitely, the idea behind organising this is to include workers in one of the biggest events happening for the NRI community from all over the world. The feedback was good and the workers were happy to be a part of it. They came to know about lot of things which they were not aware of, like the schemes and policies the government has introduced for the community's welfare," an Indian Consulate official in Dubai told Khaleej Times.
During the two-hour event, the workers were not only informed about the work the government is carrying out for their betterment and upliftment, but they were also appreciated for their contribution in India's growth and progress.
Kapil Raj, second secretary (passports, education, and culture & information) at the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, said: "It's a joint event by the Indian Embassy and the Indian Consulate. Our objective was to make these workers feel they are very much part of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations. It was also aimed at making them aware about the schemes, policies and other progressive things the government is doing for their benefit and I believe the industrial workers were satisfied to be updated on the policies."
The event was attended by Raju Balakrishnan, labour consul at the Indian Consulate in Dubai; senior member of the Indian Community, Bharatbhai Shah; and an official from the Indian Workers' Resource Centre.
