The Hijri New Year 1442 began on Thursday, August 20, with calendars across the world reading Muharram 1, the first month of the Islamic calendar.

Public and private sector employees will observe a one-day holiday on Sunday, August 23, for the Islamic New Year, and resume work on Monday, August 24.

Parking will also be free in select emirates on the occasion.
