Emirati national Ohood Sohail is a mother of two girls aged four and two. "I encourage the girls to spend two to three hours every day (playing). However, I give greater importance to outdoor play and give them permission to use devices only during the weekends," she said.
Sohail was speaking to Khaleej Times on the sidelines of an event on children's playing habits. She said she encourages her daughters to go cycling, play in parks and beaches. Since her children love swimming, she takes them to the beach often.
"I try to keep devices away from them as much as I can ... If you make active play an important part of their lives from a young age, they will continue it into their adult lives."
Speaking at the announcement of the fourth edition of the 'Children's Play Index' on Tuesday, Sohail, other mothers, and experts in the field of child psychology strongly suggested that children must only be gradually introduced to devices like mobile phones, tablets, video games and the television.
"Active play is the first priority ... Keep the devices away from them as long as possible," said UK national and mother of two children, aged nine and two, Karen Taylor. "Parents can try and define clear rules on when devices can be used ... For example, devices must not be used on the dining table or when the family spends time together."
Australian national Cady Tilahun, mother of a 22 month-old toddler, said: "Children tend to mimic their parents ... So if you want children to use less of their devices, parents must set a similar example."
