Open your minds, the doors of Shaikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) in Bur Dubai are open before you to give a glimpse of Emirati culture.
Operating under the banner of "Open Doors, Open Minds," the centre hosts programmes that aim to improve cross-cultural understanding between locals and foreigners.
A 90-minute programme introduced recently to introduce expats to the Emirati custom of welcoming guests, hosted discussions and answered questions on the culture over food and coffee.
The Fuala programme was by SMCCU to raise awareness about local customs and religion.
Fuala, which means 'good omen,' is an Emirati tradition where guests are welcomed to the Majlis over local food from 8am till afternoon and from 4.30pm to sunset.
"We want to educate expats about UAE traditions and customs in a calm and friendly ambience away from the typical lecture-format," said Abdullah bin Eisa Al Serkal, the centre's director.
Corporates, professionals, training executives and VIPs were treated to traditional Emirati food including Aseeda, Khabeesa, Balaleet Ligamat and Arabic coffee and tea.
Emirati speakers introduced different culture elements including the history of local dress and dance, etiquette of Arabic coffee, and death and marriage rituals in UAE.
Travel agent Anna Salemko, Dubai resident for a year, told Khaleej Times of her experience.
"It is a very friendly event and the speakers are funny. I got to know a lot about the Emirati culture."
Her colleague Jane Mwai, Dubai resident for 8 years, said: "I liked how they were open and welcoming to any question, even if it was sensitive. I will definitely send my tourists to this place."
The Fuala programme will take place every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30pm at the centre's courtyard in Bur Dubai.
Bookings are online at www.cultures.ae for Dh85 per person.
