Sharjah on Monday, August 10, launched a donation drive to help the thousands of people who lost everything to the tragedy that hit Lebanon.
The emergency aid and relief campaign called 'Salam Beirut' was announced by Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah; Chairperson of The Big Heart Foundation (TBHF) and Eminent Advocate for Refugee Children at UNHCR.
'Salam Beirut' seeks to bring relief to Lebanon's capital Beirut, where a massive explosion killed at least 158 people and left some 300,0000 homeless last Tuesday.
"What has hurt Beirut has hurt us all," Sheikha Jawaher wrote as she announced the campaign on Twitter and called on all individuals and organisations in the UAE and worldwide to lend a helping hand.
"Our brothers and sisters in Lebanon need us and we must do our best to fulfil our moral and humanitarian duty towards them. We know no other way but to stand firmly beside those who lost everything overnight - their loved ones, their homes, their livelihoods and their safety - to this shocking tragedy."
Donations to the 'Salam Beirut' drive can be made via SMS, bank transfers, cheques or cash.
Relief efforts will first focus on providing medical aid, food, water and shelter to the victims. This will be led by the Sharjah-based global humanitarian organisation TBHF, in coordination with on-ground relief operators in Lebanon.
TBHF officials, along with their local partners, will also carry out a detailed assessment of the damage to property to implement targeted activities and provide affected households with rehabilitation support. The foundation will help families clear the rubble and offer solutions that can boost electricity, sanitation, plumbing and carpentry maintenance.
UAE's humanitarian spirit
Sheikha Jawaher emphasised that through this initiative, "we reiterate that Sharjah and the UAE are with every family and individual in Lebanon. Our communities are inseparable".
"The 'Salam Beirut' campaign follows the strong humanitarian spirit and directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to stand by nations in their time of need," she said.
From the moment the news about the tragedy broke, TBHF has ramped up efforts and connected with its local and international partners to rally support, raise funds and deliver emergency aid to Beirut.
