Dubai residents, did you know there is a smart police service called 'Your security at the touch of a button' here? The service lets Dubai Police officers determine accurately the location of a person who makes a distress SOS using his phone.
A top police officer has called on the public to use the SOS service and benefit from it. The police can determine the location of the user, whether they are in far-flung mountainous regions, desert areas or even the sea.
Omar Abdul Aziz Al Shamsi, deputy director-general of operations, stressed the importance of the service, which can be availed by the youth and adults - "as everyone is vulnerable to danger".
"The service will help the police respond to distress calls quickly and determine the exact location of the person appealing for help. This helps the police respond to any emergency situations," said Al Shamsi.
He urged parents to download the Dubai Police app that offers this service and teach their children how to use it. "Over 7,560 people used the service last year and the Dubai Police responded quickly in each case. The police determined their whereabouts - including on the land and in the sea - and helped them." The service is the first of its kind in the world, and provides Emiratis and expatriates to call the police's command and control room directly at the press of a button.
The service has proved its effectiveness, with the police being able to help and rescue many people. The service has been designed specially for the elderly, heart disease patients, women who live alone and people with special needs.
