The powerful star Canopus that happens to be 15,000 times more luminous than the sun will be seen rising in the UAE skies just before daybreak on August 24. It will continue its appearance till the end of winter in the Arabian Peninsula.
According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, astronomer and General Supervisor of the Planetarium affiliated to the Sharjah Department of Culture and Information, said Canopus started to appear in the Yemeni skies earlier this month and will slowly become visible to the rest of the peninsula by the end of August. In Syria, the star will be positioned exactly in the direction of the Ka'aba in Makkah.
Canopus is the brightest star in the night sky after Sirius and the brightest one in the constellation, Carina.
This month will also see the sky awash with the famous Perseids meteor shower. Perseids will be at their peak on August 12-13.
The Dubai Astronomy Club is organising a free observation trip to the desert area on August 12 to mark the occasion.
Hasan Ahmed Al Hariri, chief editor of Dubai Astronomy group, said, “The meteor shower will be very beautiful. It will be visible just after moon sets in around 1.40am on the morning of August 13. We will be driving out to a very safe place in the Lehbab area on the way to Hatta to observe it.”
Another eclipse is coming this way too. The UAE will witness a partial lunar eclipse on August 16.
