Consumers can now use e-Dirham for instant payment to avail Dubai Municipality services without visiting its centres, officials announced on Monday.
Find out: Will Dubai be first to have city-wide internet via LED?
An agreement signed in this regard by the Ministry of Finance and the National Bank of Abu Dhabi aims to reduce the number of visitors to government departments by 80 per cent through using an electronic payment system.
Visitors will not need to go to the municipality or any of its centres to complete transactions. The agreement came a day after the ministry announced that 630 e-kiosks will be launched across the country.
Going smart: New app to help donate blood in Dubai
Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director-General of the municipality, told Khaleej Times that the civic body is planning to move towards the electronic wallet, where no credit or debit cards would be used.
Ease of tasks: Pay your traffic fines by debit card on the spot in Dubai
"We hope in the future to eliminate cards and enable people to use their smart phones for payments," said Lootah.
He added: "The future is in digital; it is a reality we should confront. Transactions under the government departments are secure."
Fantastic: Dubai smartest city in the Gulf
Mohammad Abdullah Al Zafein, Director of the IT Department, said an app that will facilitate payments will soon be introduced. He did not elaborate on the details.
The e-Dirham, a joint system between the Ministry of Finance and the National Bank of Abu Dhabi, aims to collect the revenue of government bodies and non-governmental organisations using a safer and more modern means.
How it works
A special window has been designed on the municipality's portal for instant payment of fees for services.

The customer can avail this service by entering the permit number. On clicking the window, the customer will be asked to enter the payment authorisation number of the requested service,
which will be provided by the service provider either directly by the employee or online or by SMS.
The customer can make the payment using the e-Dirham card and a receipt will be sent immediately and the administrative and legal procedures will follow.
