A Pakistani salesman, 39, allegedly tried to obtain Dh300,000 worth of a bank loan using forged documents, the Court of First Instance was told on Wednesday.
An Indian customer service employee at the bank said that the defendant approached the bank with a loan application in October last year.
"He had called the bank and claimed he was drawing Dh17,000 in salary. He told me he was a British national and worked at the Dubai International Airport as a civil engineer."
The accused visited the bank branch in Jebel Ali at 7pm on October 18, 2015, carrying the documents required including original salary certificate and bank statement.
The defendant filled in two forms and signed them. Accordingly and within two days, a sum of Dh300,000 was deposited by the bank in an account they opened for the accused after approving the loan. However, the day after that they learnt the defendant's documents were forged.
The defendant faced charges including forgery and use of forged documents and attempted fraud.
The police arrested the accused following a complaint by the bank.
"He admitted that he used a British man's passport copy he found online. He falsified the details including the passport's photo using Photoshop.
"He made up other cards like a labour card on which he posted the airport's logo (he also found online) and a photo that was not his own. He forged in a similar way a salary certificate," a police sergeant told the prosecutor.
However, his access to the loan amount was blocked after the bank found out about his fake papers.
The next hearing will be held on August 21.
