An Arab man has been sentenced to one year in jail and fined Dh10,000 by the Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Court after he was found guilty of resisting arrest, assaulting a cop and a nightclub owner, consuming alcohol and escaping from police detention.
As per court records, the man admitted to having consumed alcohol, and fleeing from police custody.
"I was scared because of another lawsuit filed against me in Dubai," he told the court. "Since I was under the influence of alcohol when I escaped, I was not aware what I was doing."
However, he denied resisting arrest, insulting or assaulting any police officer or nightclub owner.
"I was only spending a night with friends at the nightclub," he said.
"I did not throw water at their face nor threatened to take revenge with the help of my brother, " the man said, dismissing the allegations levelled against him.
The defence lawyer denied the charges and requested the court to check the video footage recorded by the surveillance cameras at the nightclub. "This will prove that my client is not guilty."
The court ordered adjournment of the case for reviewing the CCTV footage and completing the defence and hearing sessions.
It found the man guilty and sentenced him to one year in prison, and slapped him with a Dh10,000 fine.
