A cleaner, who allegedly intruded into a villa at night and sexually assaulted a teen resident at knifepoint, has been charged in court.
The 37-year-old Sri Lankan man is accused of sexually assaulting the 14-year-old Indian girl at knifepoint in her bedroom after covering her mouth with a duct tape.
He has been charged with sexual assault, attempted burglary and trespass in the Court of First Instance.
The court adjourned the hearing to August 7 when a translator was expected to be present.
The girl, a student, said that at around 3 am on January 27 she was woken up to see the defendant sitting in the dark on her bedside. He had put a duct tape on her mouth.
She felt scared after seeing he had a knife. "He held the knife and threatened me not to scream or move or he would kill me," she told the investigators.
She said that he abused her sexually and left.
The girl spotted the accused after about 25 days near Al Hamriyah Park in Deira, clicked his picture and reported him to the police.
The accused was arrested shortly later.
A police sergeant quoted the accused as admitting to have entered the villa in Al Waheeda through a window, looking to steal some valuables but he could not find any.
The accused admitted to the officer that he sexually assaulted the teenager after threatening her with a knife he took from the house.
