The Sharjah Misdemeanour Court of First Instance has sentenced an Arab man to three months in jail, deportation and Dh250,000 fine for insulting a female compatriot. The judgment was issued by Sharia Law according to article 2011 of Federal Law No 5 passed in 2012.
On July 18, 2015, the accused - M.A.M - insulted the woman on Whatsapp. On July 28, the woman, S.A.M, lodged a complaint. The woman told the police that the accused had lent her Dh8,000. When asked to repay, she told him that she did not have the money. In response, he sent 10 messages insulting her.
On January 20, the accused confessed that he had a dispute with the woman, who was his classmate. He also claimed that the woman sent him explicit videos on Whatsapp. He noted that his brother, who was aware of the case, advised him to sue the woman. So he filed a complaint.
His lawyer said he will appeal the case, as the accused was not aware of the court hearing, and that the woman was in Egypt when the accused sent her the messages. He had also requested the immigration to check her movements and to review messages sent between her and his client.
