A vendor has been sentenced to one year in jail for stealing Dh51,000 from a grocery store owner.
The latter had been hiring the accused illegally. The 30-year-old Bangladeshi was found guilty by the Court of First Instance. The defendant is a carpenter and was not being sponsored by the complainant, when the latter hired him as a cook.
He will be deported after serving his jail sentence. The grocery owner, a 58-year-old compatriot, said that he paid the accused Dh1,400 a month, and allowed him to stay in his flat in Naif. On July 7, he put the amount of Dh50,975 in a bedside drawer.
Shortly afterward, he found the drawer broken open, and the money missing.
"I suspected my cook, as he did not go for Friday prayers that day, and suddenly disappeared from the room. He also missed lunch," the complainant said.
But the defendant claimed during the investigation that he stole only Dh10,000.
A sum of Dh6,000 was recovered from him, and he confessed spending the rest on buying jewellery.
Two jewellery purchase receipts, dated July 9, and totalling Dh6,070 were also found on him.The verdict may be appealed.
