A man, whose sudden illness at airport exposed his smuggling of cocaine in stomach, has been sentenced to life in prison.
According to prosecution records, the traveller, a 43-year-old Togolese national, was at the Dubai International Airport on March 4 when he suddenly fell terribly sick. X-Ray test showed he was carrying lots of capsules in his body.
He was rushed to a hospital where he underwent a surgery. Cocaine, weighing less than one kilogram, was found inside capsules which he swallowed prior to his flight.
During the public prosecution investigation, the accused claimed that he was carrying the capsules without being aware of what was inside them, for another man and was to be paid more than Dh20,000.
The Court of First Instance found him guilty of smuggling drugs. It ordered him to pay a Dh50,000 worth of fine and sentenced him to be deported after completing his jail term. It also ordered that the seized drugs be confiscated. He may appeal the court's ruling.
