The Dubai Police's traffic department confiscated 1,226 cars last year as per a law issued in 2015. Deputy director-general traffic, Colonel Jamal Al Banai, said some motorists had to pay fines of Dh100,000 to get their cars released. One biker paid Dh50,000 to get his bike worth Dh100,000 released.
A top police officer said the cars of 31 people were seized for taking part in street races, while 325 cars were seized over reckless driving. Another 24 cars were seized after their owners fled from the police.
He said as per the decree issued by the government, the maximum amount permissible and obligatory to get back the vehicles involved in races on the road without the prior permission of the police is Dh100,000, while for bikes confiscated for moving on the paved roads, it is Dh50,000.
Al Banai added that almost 50 per cent of drivers have filed objections for classifying their vehicles according to the tight regulations stipulated in the decree. Al Banai pointed out that the objections will be referred to an ad hoc committee which will evaluate the offence and determine whether they are subject to the government decree, or could be included in the traffic law.
