A 22-year-old Emirati man attempted to commit suicide by trying to jump off the Sheikh Zayed Bridge in Abu Dhabi on Monday morning.
The Abu Dhabi Police said they succeeded in convincing the young man, who had already climbed up the bridge's metallic bars, to abandon his bid to end his life before he could jump down.
Cops said a police team that quickly arrived at the scene after being informed about the incident talked to the Emirati man and persuaded him to climb down the bridge.
The team also took measures to ensure the man's safety.
In a statement, Abu Dhabi Police said that initial investigations have revealed that the man was mentally unstable which made him climb the bridge.
He was taken to the nearest police station for further action.
Police had, in the morning, announced temporary closure of the roads leading to the Sheikh Zayed Bridge as they dealt with the situation.
Traffic heading to the bridge was later re-opened after the cops rescued the young man.
