A manager, who is on trial for sexually harassing an employee at his office, has been sentenced to three months in jail.
Public prosecution records show the 29-year-old Egyptian manager abused his post as the Filipina complainant's boss to ask her to stay after the official work timings. He then asked her to go inside his office, claiming he needed to talk about work. It was then that he sexually harassed her.
He earlier denied a sexual harassment charge in court, claiming he only saw her at the time of the incident for work purposes. But the Court of First Instance found him guilty and also ordered his deportation at the end of his prison term.
The case dates back to June 2 and was registered at Al Barsha police station.
A police corporal, who interrogated the accused, said the latter claimed he met the complainant in his office to discuss a certain problem that was going on with a customer. The officer quoted the manager as saying: "She then raised her voice, telling me that it was none of my business. That irritated me and I slapped her on her face."
The complainant told the police: "He had asked me to stay after office hours. This raised my suspicions, so I switched on the voice recorder on my mobile phone before walking into his office.
"He talked about business problems for some time before he moved closer to me. He asked me whether I liked him. He then sexually harassed me before slapping me."
Know the law: Is it legal to record conversations at workplace?
In the recorded conversation, the manager was heard asking the complainant about the reason she searched for his Facebook profile. He told her that it must be because she liked him, which she denied. She was heard telling him to stop behaving inappropriately with her because he was her boss.
The ruling has been appealed.
