The consumer complaints section of the Department of Economic Department (DED), Dubai, received a complaint from a consumer, who claimed he had an agreement with a trading shop to do all furniture-related work at his home. He paid the shop Dh438,829 for the job.

The consumer paid the merchant the amount in full up front, and the latter agreed to finish the work by a specified date. However, the merchant failed to finish the work on time.
The consumer claimed he could not get in touch with the merchant to find an amicable solution to the problem.
When an official from the Consumer Complaints Section investigated the complaint, he found that the company had just completed a minor part of the job.
A full report on the situation was then filed by the official for the department to take the necessary measures.
Ahmed Al Awadi, director of the department of consumer protection, said the merchant was summoned to the DED. The merchant admitted that he had failed to do the job and offered to work hard to finish it. However, the consumer rejected the proposal. The consumer also referred to the shoddy job done by the merchant.
The DED then directed the merchant to refund the complainant in full - Dh438,829 - within 15 working days.
Al Awadi has advised merchants to stick to specifications, and other terms and conditions as agreed with the consumer. He urged them not to make promises that they can't keep.
