The Abu Dhabi City Municipality has started the Dh109 million Sheikh Zayed Tunnel and Street Improvement Project in Abu Dhabi to enhance transportation services and support the requirements of Abu Dhabi master development.

The project includes new entry and exit points for the tunnel, and involves a significant improvement to junctions with other streets to enhance street traffic capacity and improve the traffic safety of users in this vital street.

The municipality will undertake the project by adding improvements to Phase 1 instead of carrying out 3 phases. This includes upgrading Sheikh Zayed Tunnel and Street as per traffic safety requirements and ensuring flexible traffic flow for both vehicles and road users.

The improvement works that will continue for 790 days, includes constructing a 400-meter-long slipway between Sheikh Zayed Surface Street and Sheikh Zayed Street Tunnel between Al Falah Street and Hazza Street junction by adding two tunnel-bound lanes in the direction exiting Abu Dhabi, and two lanes exiting the tunnel  in the direction of the city entrance.

These additions would significantly improve traffic flow at the junction of Qasr Al Bahr with Hazza Street.

The upgrading works also include improving junctions with Al Falah Street by adding two lanes in the direction of Al Reem and Al Mariya islands, and improving the surface street at Qasr Al Bahr junction to enable smooth traffic flow in the direction of the city.

The project also reflects the commitment of Abu Dhabi Government to improve the quality of services and provide a modern road network that contributes to the overall development drive and serve as a key supporter of the local economic development.

The project also forms part of the emirate's ongoing development to satisfy community's needs and realise the overall vision of the emirate.
