Eighteen new smart gates that let passengers zip through immigration within seven to 10 seconds were launched at the Dubai International Airport Terminal 2. With these gates, passengers don't require any form of human intervention to clear immigration.
Ten of the gates have been set up in the arrivals area, and the rest in departures.
The gates can identify travellers through their eyes, fingers and faces. They have light indicators to guide passengers through the steps required to complete the process. At the end of it, passengers are issued a transit pass that can be used every time they pass through the airport.
With these, Dubai airports now have a total of 122 smart gates - 30 in Terminal 1, 18 in Terminal 2, 64 in Terminal 3, and 10 at Al Maktoum International Airport.
While launching the gates, Major-General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, director general of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA), said: "These exclusive smart gates have resulted in the development of intelligent projects at the Dubai International Airports. GDRFA Dubai seeks to achieve the vision of making the UAE one of the best countries in the world in terms of security and safety."
The number of passengers opting for the smart gates increased to 2.63 million in the first five months of this year, as compared to 2.16 million during the same period last year.
