The Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) on Thursday opened a new power station worth Dh33.9 million in the heavily populated Shaml area in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.
Mohammed Saleh, director-general, said the new power station, which has a capacity of 75MVA, will meet the current and future needs of the Shaml area and its suburbs.
"The new power station, also to serve Al Ghib, Al Soor and Al Hudaibah, contains three transmitters, feeders and switches with 33/11 KV," he said.
The new station - to be connected with three 33KV electric circuits - is to cut loads on the power stations of the Old Nakheel City, Al Gasidat area, and nearby stations, Saleh explained.
Fewa is all set to open two new power stations at the Shaikh Khalifa Hospital and Al Dheit areas this March, he disclosed. "Each of these consists of three transmitters, and has a capacity of 75MVA."
The total cost of these with due power cables stand at around Dh68 million, he noted.
"The first station is to serve the hospital, along with the adjacent areas, and important residential projects while the second station will cover Al Dheit area."
"Fewa is also building four other stations at Ghalila, Al Rams, Al Rifa, and Al Hamraniya areas to meet the requirements of the ongoing and planned projects in the emirate."
Fewa is further planning nine other substations in the near future. "These will support the infrastructure and massive urban expansions in the emirate."
Saleh noted that Fewa has a plan to replace all the old and damaged lamp posts, yet it all depends on the RAK Municipality to send the routes where these posts need to be replaced. "We are also coordinating with some specialised companies to replace all lights with power saving LEDs."
Fewa is also planning to build four water desalination stations in the northern emirate to bridge the expected gap of 250 million gallons by the year 2030, Saleh announced.
