ADJD committee handed down the penalty for non-compliance with decisions and directives governing the profession
The new speed limits are decided after reviewing and evaluating the speeds on the roads, in conjunction with the directorate’s main partners - Abu Dhabi Transport Department and the civic bodies of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Gharbia.
“The new speed limits have been endorsed on the basis of the strategy of the Speeds Department in the emirate, in-depth and detailed study on the volume of vehicular traffic as well as the engineering specifications of the road”, said Brigadier Hussein Ahmed Al Harthi, Director at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate.
He called on drivers to abide by the new speed limits which are clearly written and shown on the signboards on the main streets in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Gharbia. He also urged them to abide by the temporary speed limits on road diversions; projects work sites on internal roads and highways.
The new speed limit on Rashid bin Saeed Street which extends from Al Maqta Bridge to Al Saada Street has been increased from 60km/hour to 80km/hour and on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street in the area from Mussafah Flyover to Al Saada Street has been fixed to100km/hour, while speed limit on Bainona Street from Inter Roundabout to Emirates Palace Roundabout has been reduced from 60km/hour to 40km/hour.
“Motorists should crane their head and read the new speed limits on signboards installed on roads as the speed limits have been changed in many streets,” he reiterated. “In Al Ain, speed limit on Umm Al Oush Street has been increased from 60km/hour to 80km/hour, while on the new street for trucks, from Fertilizer Plant to the West, it has become 80km/hour for trucks and 100km/hour for cars,” he said.
Speed limit on Mohammed bin Khalifa Street, from Al Qattara Roundabout to the North, has been reduced from 80km/hour to 60km/hour. No change has been made on speed limits on Abu Dhabi-Al Ain Highway, which begins from Bani Yas Park’s flyover to Al Sad neighborhood; Abu Dhabi-Dubai Highway, which starts from Al Mafraq Flyover to Seeh Shuaib and from Al Shihama to Seeh Shuaib; Swihan Highway from Al Shawamikh Interchange to Al Heer neighborhood, he said.
The change of speed limits is designed to improve the traffic safety on internal roads and highways in the emirate. The new rules regarding the speed limits also aim at providing safe, convenient and economic transport for all segments of the society, he said.
