The UAE will soon introduce a legislative amendment for its citizens in a bid to increase the social security funds provided to its people of determination, legalise their working hours and leave, and improve other health and social services provided to them.

In a recent letter to the Federal National Council (FNC), the UAE government said it has approved a number of recommendations that were adopted by the council. It has held talks with the Federal Ministry of Community Development about services being provided to people of determination in the country.

Among the key recommendations was a revision of the sum provided as social security to people of determination.

The FNC members had also recommended media programmes to create more awareness that would help change the society's perceptions about people of determination and highlight their positive role and contributions.

A mobile unit system will be introduced for visiting the homes of people of determination across the UAE to provide them with various services, especially those who suffer from severe disabilities. A review of the People of Determination cards is in the works to include more privileges.

The council had also recommended the establishment of special rehabilitation centres for people of determination, who are above 18 years, organise workshops to equip them with various skills and develop their capabilities in accordance with the approved financial allocations.

The government said it would incorporate the recommendation that proposed a legislative amendment to legalise working hours and leave for people of determination and their families in both public and private sectors.

The FNC sent 21 recommendations to the government regarding the Federal Ministry of Community Development’s policy on the services provided to people of determination. A discussion, which looked at three primary areas, was held.

Talks were held on legislation related to the protection of the rights of this community group as far as healthcare, educational, economic, social sectors are concerned to further empower and enhance their role in the government and private sectors.

The letter received from the government included the Cabinet's seven recommendations, including amending Federal Law No. (29) of 2006 to empower people of determination.
