During this time Anwar has been associated with Tawam Hospital and been witness to various administrations including Whittaker, Charter Medical, Ministry of Health and Abu Dhabi Health Authority.

Although throughout his tenure Dr Halim has been Head of Urology, he has also served as Chief of Surgery for 8 years and as Medical Director for 6.

The Halim children have followed very much in their father's medical footsteps. Both are former pupils of Al Ain English Speaking School and Akbar is completing his MBChB at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, while Sadia, who during her time at Roedeen School captained the under 14 English Girls' Cricket Team, has completed her general medical studies and is currently specialising in cardiology.

Nandita has also contributed to the family achievements by being selected to represent India in the Asian Games in hurdles events. She also was a hostess with Air India.

Looking back over his time in the Garden City, Anwar recalls the occasion when he removed a uric bladder stone from an ailing Orang Ootang at Al Ain Zoo. The good doctor insists that afterwards they became fast friends.

Dr Halim is not moving too far away initially, as his next post will be as Executive Director to the Board of Governors at the Royal Hospital in Sharjah. This operation will be the largest private hospital in the UAE, specialising in dialysis, renal diseases and cardiology and will incorporate a motel unit to aid the recuperation of the patients.

Dr Anwar Halim is also currently holding a joint professorship at the Tufts School of Medicine, Boston, US.

THE Muslim Educational Society of Al Ain has elected Mr A. P. Hamza, a leading NRI businessman in Al Ain and Buraimi as its new president. Also on the executive committee is Mr P. K. Mohamed Basheer, secretary, and the new treasurer is Engineer Nasarulla.

The general body meeting was held at the MES auditorium earlier in February and was presided over by Mr K K Abdussalam, the outgoing president. The meeting passed the working report for the last three years, presented by Mr K. P. Shahi, joint secretary, while Mr P. K. Mohamed submitted the accounts and audit report.

Mr K. K. Abdussalam continues on the executive committee as vice president along with C. P. Mohamed Iqbal. P. Mohamed is the other joint secretary, while Cheriya Bava is the assistant treasurer. Patrons of the society are Mr Shoukath, Mr K. M. Abdul Aziz and Mr M. Khalid.

Quiz kings

PARTICIPATING in general knowledge competitions has become a serious and often lucrative business in the Capital of the Eastern Region. In particular, Saturday night sees trivia buffs migrating to Paco's in the Hilton Hotel to test the old grey matter in intellectual competition.

Frequent winners are often the teams led by local residents Noel Boardman and David Young, and last week they went one step further by winning the ongoing accumulator. By answering 10 out of 10, they earned themselves 1,100 Dirhams to go along with the numerous dinners, which have been the frequent fruit of their efforts.
