Over 300 people gathered at the Indian Embassy Auditorium in Bur Dubai to experience self realisation or kundalini awakening through a meditation technique called sahaja yoga.
Although the founder of Sahaja Yoga, Nirmala Srivastava (1923-2011) widely known as Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi or as "Mother" by her followers is no more, hundreds watched, practised and followed the steps to achieve a state of self-realisation through her videos played on a huge screen of the auditorium.
The concept of sahaja yoga meditation is to disconnect from everything that drains you, drags you and makes you feel unhappy and achieve a state of mental silence.
From children as young as five to senior citizens the event saw a mixed gathering of scores of people from different walks of life. At the helm of the session was Rajiv Lal, who is a sahaja yoga practitioner for over 20 years, who explained that kundalini awakening is actually residual energy that enters the foetus and gives it life.
"We all are born with this energy. If you break up the word sahaja then "Sah" in Sanskrit means "with" and "Ja" means "born." So we are born with this energy but it is in sleeping state and so there is a process of awakening it. This process was devised by Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi in the year 1970. So sahaja yoga is a unique method of meditation based on an experience called self realisation (kundalini awakening) that can occur within each human being," he said.
Sahaja yoga practitioners believe that through this process an inner transformation takes place by which one becomes moral, united, integrated and balanced.
How you can know if you have attained that level? Rajiv said: "One can actually feel the all-pervading divine power as a cool breeze, as described in all religions and spiritual traditions of the world. This is the actualisation of such transformation which has been proved and experienced by hundreds of thousands in over 90 countries. It is entirely free of charge, as one cannot pay for the experience of Divine Love."
Connecting it to one's happiness, banker Ani Dave, who has been practising sahaja yoga for over 10 years now, told Khaleej Times: "Happiness is when you don't worry about the future or the past. It is when you are in the present moment. And that's what meditation does to you - it puts you in the present moment, giving you balance and harmony."
Murthy, 60, and her son Uday Murthy, who were part of the audience said sahaja yoga had brought about sea-change in their life. "I had severe migraine for eight years and I was introduced to sahaja yoga. My neighbour told me about this meditation and I thought let me just try that. I felt the change in my first sitting itself. My migraine has gone for good. My lifestyle has totally changed. I used to stay very agitated and was short-tempered and now I have become calm, patient and achieved my self-realisation."
Her son Uday chips in by saying: " I have experienced this amazing energy since birth. This is a power that resides in all human beings as kundalini and to realise this power we follow sahaja yoga. It is a way to help us focus as due to stress and distractions our concentration levels are very low. What makes this powerful is the realisation that you are connected to the power that created you. This energy is the source of the every living being, it governs us."
The programme commenced and concluded with Indian classical music with some poetry recitation as music is integral part of sahaja yoga. Shri Prem Chand, consul of passport, attestation and community affairs and welfare, at the Indian Consulate, Dubai, was the chief guest at the event.
What is kundalini awakening?
Kundalini awakening has been described in Indian scriptures and ancient texts around the world as dormant energy that once awakened connects individual consciousness to collective consciousness. Once connected to collective consciousness, one gets elevated spiritually, physically and emotionally. On the spiritual level, one establishes connection with the all pervading cosmic energy and feels enlightened, whereas on the physical side one, gets rid of most of diseases which are considered incurable like diabetes, hypertension, asthma, etc.
