Dr Juwan Salim Al Dhahiri, Chairman of the Department of Municipal Affairs, told Khaleej Times that the project aims at expanding the bridge and intersection of Mafraq.

The Mafraq bridge is one of the key arteries linking various emirates with neighbouring countries. For the last 30 years, the bridge has been serving motorists coming to Abu Dhabi from Dubai, Northern Emirates, Al Ain, Oman and Saudi Arabia. He said the new interchange is necessary in the light of the massive urban expansions at Mafraq, new residential developments like the Khalifa bin Zayed City and Mohammed bin Zayed City, and developments in Shamekha and Falah areas. Heavy vehicular traffic has also been factored in planning the interchange.

"The interchange will provide an effective solution to the growing multi-directional traffic movement. It will take 24 months to complete," he said.

The interchange will have three levels of grade separated traffic, including viaducts, as well 75-metre long main bridge with four lanes in each direction and a shoulder serving outbound traffic towards Dubai-Sila.

The project's scope of work also involves construction of two box girder bridges - one of them will serve traffic from Abu Dhabi to Shahama and the other from Al Ain to Sila.

It will also feature several slip and loop roads stretching 18km to ease traffic in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Al Gharbia and Northern Region.

The feasibility study of the project has taken into consideration a series of surveys of the present vehicular traffic and the projected traffic movement up to the next 25 years.uae
