The workers were released after a brief detention. They claimed that they were only protesting against the treatment meted out to them by their employer and demanding that their salaries be paid on time.

A. Venkatesan, an electrician employed with the company, had ended his life on Thursday after leaving a suicide note that said he had not been paid for a few months and his family back home was drowning in debt.

One of the three workers taken to the Bur Dubai police station told Khaleej Times that he had been arbitrarily picked up by the company as a scapegoat.

“It was about 6pm when the company officials arrived with the police at our labour camp. Many of Venketesan’s friends were with us. The company official told the police that we were creating trouble and the police arrested me and two others,” he said.

Despite repeated attempts made by Khaleej Times, officials from the company could not be contacted.

Meanwhile, about a hundred workers from the company visited the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs yesterday and protested against their employer’s stand.

“All we are asking for is a settlement of our dues and air tickets so that we can go back to India,” said Ashraf Ali.

“The company’s manager earlier told us that we would get two months’ salary right away with the rest to be given to us next month. But he never gave this to us in writing and the same evening these arrests took place,” said Ashraf.

HELPLINE: The Indian Community Welfare Committee (ICWC) has meanwbeen inundated by calls from individuals seeking to help A.Venketesan’s family, said K. Kumar, President of Indian Association. “We have advised them to donate their contributions to the ICWC bank account. They can address their contributions in the name of A. Venkatesan and we will hand over the money to his family back home,” he said. Individuals wishing to contribute to the fund can transfer their amount to the following account: ICWC Bank Account, Bank of Baroda, Dubai, Account Number: 63131
