Salah Bu Farusha, Head of the Dubai Traffic Prosecution, said the devices, each worth Dh140,000, were introduced by the Dubai Public Prosecution in June. Farusha said that breathalysers may also be introduced to police patrols to check motorists who are suspected to be under the influence of alcohol.

He said that the Dubai Public Prosecution had proposed to the General Department of Forensic Science in Dubai Police, to use the devices, which help save time in assessing alcohol levels in the human body.

Previously, drunk drivers needed to wait nine hours to receive the results of the blood tests, but the breathalyser allows accurate results in a few minutes.

He said the police found that the majority of people who were suspected for driving under the influence of alcohol were involved in accidents that were caused when they dozed off while driving.
