A popular shopping centre in Ajman has been shut down for selling drinking water that was found to be unsafe for human consumption.
The Ajman Department of Economic Development (Aded) ordered the closure on Sunday, following a report filed by a consumer who fell ill and suffered from diarrhoea and fatigue after drinking the water. He has been hospitalised since then.
Aded officers, in coordination with the municipality, confiscated 215 bottles of drinking water which were being offered as part of promotions.
A thorough inspection of commercial centres has also started. Supermarkets, groceries and cooperative societies were visited to ensure that they are not selling the same type of water.
Misleading label
Hassan Al Shehhi, director of the department of anti-commercial fraud at Aded, said inspectors found that the water bottles had labels with wrong expiry dates.
It turned out that other outlets did not have the expired products on their shelves, he added.
Besides the closure, the store was also ordered to pay a hefty fine for selling items with misleading information.
Al Shehhi urged consumers to check the expiration dates of products first before buying them. And in case of violations, they can file a complaint by calling the hotline 80070.
