People came out on the streets and many moved around aimlessly in their cars to escape the heat of their homes.
With street lights and traffic signals not operational temporarily in these areas due to the power outage since 10pm, residents found it difficult to reach their homes bracing through the traffic which moved at snails pace.
The impact of slow traffic was also felt on the Dubai-Sharjah highway which remained clogged until late night.
The effect of the power outage was also felt by petrol stations located in Al Khan and Khalidiya areas which were deserted without electricity, while shops and commercial establishments with no lights were forced to shut down early.
A source at the Sewa emergency number inundated with calls from residents told Khaleej Times, “the power outage was caused due to a cable short circuit in the main transformer in the area.” “ Work was on to repair the fault and power will be restored in an hours time,” the official assured.
He said that the power outage was caused at around 10 pm in some parts of Sharjah and SEWA engineers were on their job to repair the fault.
A resident returning home from work complained he was caught up in the worst traffic jams faced recently on the Dubai-Sharjah road. “Entering the Al Khan area, I was shocked to see the area in pitch darkness and the police patrols were on the streets and at the traffic signals and intersections monitoring the traffic. The road looked eery without lights and even the gas station located near the old Sharjah Expo was plunged in darkness.”
“I was running out of gas, but the gas station unable to operate due to the power outage, refused to provide the service,” he complained, wondering, why such essential service providers have no generators to handle such crisis.
The otherwise lively Buheira Corniche area was plunged into darkness with no street lights and no lights in the buildings, while another busy area of Al Majaz including the park had no lights last night.
A grocery store owner in Khalidiya area of Sharjah complained of poor business following the sudden power outage from around 9.30 pm in the area.
He said: “I had no customer for last one and half hour since the lights went off. Except, for a few who came to purchase candles, my overall business this evening has not been very good forcing me to close shop early. The outlet otherwise closes daily at 12.30 pm daily.”
Abdul Wahab, a resident of Al Majaz area said he was tired of driving aimlessly in his car alongwith the family.
“Upon arriving home, I learnt that my building had no generator and therefore all the lifts were not functional. I live on the 10th storey and climbing up 10 storey alongwith my wife and a two-year old baby was difficult so I decided to sit in the airconditoned car and move around on the Sharjah streets until the power was restored.”
