The public buses will begin operating in January 2009.
The buses will operate daily from 5am until mid-night. The agreement was signed during a meeting held in RAKTA office in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK). Col. Nasser Al Muradad, Chairman of RAKTA and Shaikh Sultan bin Majid Al Qasimi, Deputy Director of Al Arabia Taxi Company, signed the deal paving the way for a joint venture.
A fleet of 75 buses will be gradually introduced in the emirate and they will be operated by Al Hamra Buses, a company owned by the RAK government. While 35 of these buses will be operating an inter-emirate service, the rest will transport commuters to various destinations within the emirate.
Al Muradad noted that initially small buses with the capacity to carry 15-25 passengers would ply on local routes and big buses of 50-passengers capacity for inter-emirates routes.
The central bus station will be located in Nakheel area with local routes from Nakheel to RAK Airport, Al Sham and Jazeera Al Hamra.’
