The Ras Al Khaimah Police have fined 1,583 motorists and impounded 83 vehicles as part of an intensive traffic awareness campaign. Additionally, the police have advised 75 drivers to observe traffic rules during the campaign themed 'obligation'.
Major Salem Burqiba, team leader of the campaign, on Tuesday said the campaign that was launched earlier this month is meant to boost road safety. "The campaign will also help curb road accidents and casualties, and ensure a smooth traffic flow."
The two-month scheme, which covers all internal roads and highways of the emirate, "will hopefully result in an accident-free society", he added.
The RAK police studied the traffic statistical report issued last year, and identified the main reasons behind the mishaps that were recorded, he underlined. Speeding, reckless driving and distraction while driving were some of the main reasons behind last year's road mishaps. "Entering the main road without checking if it was clear first had led to many fatal accidents."
He said the RAK Police have deployed more traffic patrols to curb accidents. "The traffic accident hotspots were given more attention."
The police have also adopted a plan to re-engineer the roads on which the most number of fatal accidents were reported.
