Traffic deaths decreased by 32 per cent in 2015 as compared to 2014 in Fujairah, a top police officer has said.
Brigadier Mohammed Ahmed bin Ghanim Al Kaabi, Commander-in-Chief of the Fujairah Police, said 19 people were killed in traffic accidents last year as compared to 28 in 2014.
Brigadier Kaabi attributed the drop in traffic fatalities to additional police patrols deployed on the roads of the emirate. He said "accident hot-spots" were determined after a thorough study, after which additional patrols were deployed.
Citing figures compiled by the Fujairah Police, Brigadier Al Kaabi said: "Despite the drop in traffic fatalities, the number of accidents itself shot up by 46 per cent."
In 2015, 15,548 accidents were reported, as compared to 10,591 accidents reported in 2014.
"Moderate injuries last year dropped by 28 per cent, with 82 persons sustaining injuries, as compared to 115 the previous year. The number of serious injuries last year stood at 23, which was the same in 2014 as well," Brig Al Kaabi added.
