The Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department issued a statement regarding a video that went viral on social media.
The statement reads: "We refute the rumours on social media about the so-called incident where a Qur'an student was beaten by his teacher at a mosque in Dubai.
"This incident did not happen in Dubai. The video has been shared on social media multiple times and it took place many years ago."
It affirmed that the department maintains strict rules and regulations at all religious centres and mosques for students and worshippers under its care.
Religious teachers are given clear instruction on disciplinary action complicit with local and global standards, it concluded.
In the video, a young boy is visibly cuffed, struck on the head, and chased around a mosque while other students watch.
Residents should be aware that sharing rumours and other false statements or "fake news" is a criminal offence that is punishable by law with a fine of up to Dh1 million.
