Russian has become one of the official languages used at the Abu Dhabi courts, it was announced on Monday, October 14. Thanks to the move, the sizeable Russian community in Abu Dhabi will be able to lodge claims and raise grievances in their language.
This is the sixth language to be included on interactive forms of statement of claims filed before courts, alongside Arabic, English, Hindi, Chinese and French. The UAE is home to more than 100,000 Russian expats.
The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) said on Monday that the adoption of the language would help expats learn about litigation procedures and their rights and responsibilities without the need for a translator. Interactive forms in the language will be made available on the ADJD website.
Yousef Saeed Al Abri, undersecretary of the ADJD, said the adoption of bilingual claim forms comes in line with the department's vision towards a "modern, sophisticated and open judicial environment". This will reinforce Abu Dhabi's position as a "business-friendly environment and a destination for skilled labour".
Authorities said they have created bilingual language guides to explain complex legal terms and used infographics in an effort to help people understand court processes.
