Spurred by a report in the Arabic media about blood shortage at the hospital, tweeters in the UAE urged people to donate blood and save the lives of 450 thalassaemia patients at the hospital. Many promised to visit the hospital by the end of the day or over the weekend to donate. According to the tweets, there was a shortage of blood types O+ and B+.
“Heard of a shortage in donated blood in our hospitals, I headed to Latifa Hospital to do my duty,” tweeted Shaikh Mohammad using his official Twitter handle @HHShkMohd.
“It is the responsibility for everyone in the community (individuals and organisations) to take part in supporting our blood banks,” he added.
He also tweeted, “Just visited the thalassaemia Centre in Dubai and met with a group of children there…it was an emotional experience”
@HalaBadri said: “There is a shortage in blood types O+ and B+ at the thalassaemia centres. Please support by donating blood at Latifa Hospital.”
Similarly, @aburomman65 tweeted: “Save a life by donating blood. 450 lives are in danger due to a blood shortage in the Blood Donation Centre at Latifa Hospital.”
An outpouring of praise and appreciation followed the news of Shaikh Mohammad’s blood donation. “God bless you,” wrote @Dina_AlNaib. “Legend” tweeted @DubaiDollDiary.
Talking to Khaleej Times in August last year when there was a seasonal dip in blood stocks, Dr Laila Al Shaer, Head of the Dubai Blood Donation Centre (DBDC) at the hospital, had urged people to come forward and donate blood. — asmaalizain@khaleejtimes.com
