Bicycles and motorbikes are increasingly causing accidents in Sharjah, a top police official has said.
Lt-Col Muhammad Alay Al Naqbi, director of the traffic and patrols department at the Sharjah Police, said they have begun a crackdown on two-wheelers not adhering to the traffic regulations in the emirate. "We have received a large number of complaints from motorists about accidents due to negligence from bicycle and motorbike riders. Two-wheelers on the roads have increased substantially during the Covid-19 situation as it is being used to deliver foods and groceries.
"Police patrols have noticed that some of these riders are disrupting traffic and causing accidents. In addition to the dangers they pose, reckless riders also cause inconvenience to people in various residential areas," he added. "The police have cracked down several riders for flouting traffic rules. Some of them were found riding against the traffic while other overloaded their motorcycles, causing them to lose balance," said Lt-Col Al Naqbi.
He said that a campaign has been launched to educate two-wheeler riders about the dangers of not complying with traffic rules, in coordination with the Sharjah Municipality. "Riders must use safety gears - helmet and phosphorous jacket - and adhere to the set regulations. They should not ride unlicensed motorbikes."
Lt-Col Al Naqbi also called on shop owners not to allow their employees to drive motorcycles without a driver's licence.
