The Sharjah Charity Association (SCA) coordinated with the Sharjah Police and paid Dh2.8 million (m) to help settle debts of 89 inmates from various nationalities.
The humanitarian gesture is part of an initiative called “financial relief from distress”, which is aimed at ensuring familial and social stability in the emirate.

The initiative ensured the release of 89 inmates, who were languishing in Sharjah’s jails and correctional centres because of their financial liabilities.
Fortunately, the SCA authorities came forward and settled the inmates’ dues with banks, financial companies, individuals, realty firms, landlords, rightful claimants etc.
Abdullah Saif bin Hindi, Director of Resources and Support Services Department, SCA, said the organisation had settled the mounting debts of several inmates. Though the total outstanding dues were Dh7.7m, the SCA could pay Dh2.2m on behalf of 89 inmates who had defaulted in their payments.
Philanthropy is at the heart of the goodwill gesture, he added.
He said the financial support would give these inmates a second chance and they could start their life afresh.
“The UAE society is known for its kindness, generosity and tolerance,” he said.
He cited that the SCA would reach out to philanthropists for donations in a bid to keep up with their humanitarian work and help settle the inmates' debts.
