The four markets included a Friday market, a livestock and fish market in Al Bataih, and a fodder market in Al Madam.

The markets have been completed and handed over to the authorities concerned for their official inauguration, said Ali bin Shaheen Al Suwaidi, chairman of SPWD.

Friday Market: Inspired by local heritage

He pointed out that the Friday market’s design is inspired by the local culture and heritage, which is an integral part of the emirate’s past, present and future. The market is in a key area next to the livestock and camel market and the municipality of Al Bataih.

It will benefit the residents of Al Bataih, as well as neighbourhoods near Sharjah Al Dhaid Road. The Friday market has great importance in the region’s economy and provides investment opportunities for its residents. The market also houses commercial stores to serve people's needs. Constructed in an area of 13,000 square meters, the market includes 15 shops and 40 car spaces.

Al Suwaidi added that the project was chalked out after a thorough study of the conditions and requirements of the market in Sharjah, apart from a survey which took stock of the traders' opinion. Traders hailed the idea of setting up the market because of its positive impact on their business.

He stressed that the market will be a destination for citizens from all the emirates and for tourists as well.

Livestock Market

The department has also built a market for livestock (and camels) in Al Bataih area at a cost of Dh17 million, said Mohammad bin Yarouf, director of project in SPWD. He pointed out that the market is spread across an area of 37,000 square meters.

Bin Yarouf emphasised that the market has more than 23 stockades dedicated to livestock of various kinds. Each stockade is constructed on 57 square meters with a front yard. It is separated by a fence in front of each shop. The camel section has 21 barns, each of 90 square meters, with an open front yard and separated by a fence.

Fodder Market

This market has two large buildings devoted to the sale of fodder, each containing 10 shops. The area of each shop is 41 square meters. There are four shaded areas for auction.

The market also has a building for selling birds. There are eight shops, each on 27 square meters, in this building. The market is surrounded by a grid wall 846 meters long, with two main gates.

It adheres to international standards, with a focus on hygiene.

“Attached to the livestock market is a sophisticated slaughterhouse which is fully equipped with the latest technologies used for slaughtering, cutting and packing of the meat, whether for personal use, commercial purposes or events,” Yarouf said.

Fish Market

The department has constructed a fish market in Al Bataih, said Khalifa Al Darmaki, director of Al Dhaid branch of SPWD. This market has a building whose ground floor covers an area of 810 square meters. It consists of 16 fish shops, and each shop’s area is 35 square meters with a hall for cleaning and cutting fish apart from administrative offices and service rooms.
