A number of measures have been put in place to prevent abuse of power by police officers in Sharjah jails, according to a top official.
Major Abdullah Al Maleeh, Team Member of the Human Rights Committee of Sharjah Police, said that inmates of the correctional and punitive institutions of Sharjah have been provided with "a phone facility", which enables them to report any case of torture, misuse of power or use of excessive force against them around the day.
Al Maleeh added that the Sharjah Police work within the framework of strategic values laid down in the Ministry of Interior's strategy including the vales of justice, fair treatment and integrity.
He said that the preventive measures are part of the open-door policy and concerned bodies meet daily to take stock of the situation.
Besides, Wednesdays have been allocated for the foreign diplomatic missions to follow up on the affairs of their citizens.
Major Abdullah stressed that no complaints have been lodged through any communication channel that report cases of torture, misuse of power or excessive force.
"Even no administrative report has been put forward against a police officer in the Sharjah Police HQ regarding any abuse on the inmates. This shows efforts exerted over the past years to boost the culture of respecting human rights as well as respecting those dealing with the Sharjah Police," he said.
