Sharjah - Pumping capacity of main treatment plant increased
In its ongoing efforts to keep pace with urban development in the emirate, the Sharjah Municipality carried out an improvement project in its sewage pumping plants and expanded the sewerage pumping capacity of its main treatment plant.
The department has already started the upgrading work in the pumping station at Al Soor area, informed Thabit Al Turaifi, Director General of Sharjah City Municipality.
Renovation work is on and an old station that was established in 1977 has been replaced to keep pace with the urban planning in the area. Construction and expansion work has also been carried out in the area as well as in eight commercial buildings in accordance with the new requirements.
Talking about the improvement projects and how it was carried out to test and ensure the effectiveness of the plant, Al Turaifi said, “The Municipality, through its flows programme, had a positive effect and managed to reduce the cost from Dh37 million to Dh5 million.”
He pointed out that the Municipality is keen to enhance its role in providing the best services and developing various projects affiliated with it. The pumping plant is considered to be one of the most important ones and serves several areas, including Jubail, Al Nad, Al Qasimia and Al Sour. It also serves many new facilities and other commercial buildings in the area.
Al Tarifi explained that the municipality has raised the capacity of the plant from 500 cubic metres to 2,500 metres because of its strategic importance in wastewater disposal and in line with the urban boom and population growth in the area.
Eng. Hasan Al Tifaq, Assistant Director-General of the Agriculture and Environment Department, explained that the plant will be controlled and monitored remotely through the electronic SCADA system in the main control room. This reflects the municipality’s keenness to promote digital transformation. The new plant will cope help with the pressure obtained in the past due to its limited capacity.
Al Tifaq added that the Municipality also carried out improvements in eight other main pumping stations in Sharjah city that were operating according to advanced systems and work to pump sewage water to the main treatment plant.
