The Sharjah Police on Friday foiled a suicide attempt by a Russian woman who threatened to jump from the top of a building in Al Tawoon area after spending almost three hours negotiating with her.
A senior police official told Khaleej Times that the 27-year-old woman, who lives in the same building, went to the roof at 8.30am. Residents of the building called the police after she rebuffed their requests to come down.
The police reached site and tried to convince the woman to get down, but she refused.
Finally, a police officer managed to reach the top of the building while others continued to negotiate with her. The officer grabbed her down and then convinced her to get down to the ground. The police detained her and started interrogation to find out the reason for her suicide attempt. However, the police didn't reveal what caused the woman to attempt to take her own life.
Eyewitnesses told Khaleej Times that the woman started screaming and shouting in Russian and broken English while some residents tried to convince her to get down. "When she refused to respond to the residents, they decided to call the police. It was a long drama which started at 8.30am and continued till 11am. Residents of the building even decided to spread sponge on the floor to save her in case she jumped," said Mustafa Abdul Gaffar, a resident.
