The Sharjah Police have recorded a 10 per cent decrease in traffic jams on the emirate's roads thanks to a radar system that was introduced earlier this year to monitor trucks. The radars can detect trucks plying on roads during prohibited times.
The police also recorded a decline in traffic accidents involving trucks in the first quarter of 2015 as compared to 2014. "Eight accidents involving trucks were recorded in the first quarter of 2015 as compared to 13 in the same period last year," said Captain Jamal Obaid Bu Afra, Director of Roads Monitoring Section of Sharjah Police.
He said these radars have been installed on highways as well as internal roads.
The new radar system was first proposed in 2013. "In the first phase, the special radars were installed on important roads like Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Al Dhaid Road and Al Madam Road. In the second phase, radars will be installed in 16 locations including the Shaikh Khalifa Road, Emirates Road, Airport Road and industrial areas," said Bu Afra.
Trucks are prohibited on Sharjah roads from 5.30am to 9.30am; from 1pm to 3.30pm; and from 5pm to 9.30pm.
