Last Tuesday with a blood donation campaign where more than 120 people donated blood at the Shia Mosque in Jaffliya, Satwa.

Ali Kassam, spokesman of the Shia congregation, said that `Ashura' which is observed on the 10th of Muharram is the holiest day for Shias all over the world. "On this day, Shias mourn the death of Imam Hussain and his family on the plains of Karbala in Iraq," Ali Kassam said.

To commemorate the occasion, Shias in Dubai had constructed a miniature model of Karbala and the Euphrates river martyrdom sites complete with scale models of the protagonists.

Mr Kassam told the Dubai Shias congregation last Tuesday that henceforth, `Ashura' will be commemorated every year with a blood donation drive.
