The Centre for Regulation of Transport by Hire Cars (TransAD), the taxi regulatory authority in the Capital, announced on Thursday that with the fare revision, the flag-down charge would increase by 50 fils during the day and 40 fils at night. The running meter charge will increase by 27 fils per kilometre during the day and 36 fils per kilometre at night.
It will increase by 19 fils per kilometre for travelling more than 50km during the day and night.
A minimum fare of Dh10 has also been fixed for night travel — between 10pm and 6am. “This would increase the taxi availability during the night hours,” said Mohamed Hussain Al Hosani, Director of Franchise and Licensing at the TransAD.
The tariff has been increased only for silver taxis in the emirate, while the old taxis, some of which are still in operation, will be phased out by the end of this year.
Speaking to the media, Al Hosani said the fare hike was based on financial studies and analyses conducted by the centre during 2011. The centre paid special attention to the changing trends in the demand for taxis, customer safety and service enhancements, driver’s working hours and wages and financial stability of the service provided, he added.
In order to encourage the commuters to book taxis through the call centre, the booking fee has been reduced by 40 per cent to Dh3 from Dh5 for the day trip and 20 per cent to Dh4 from Dh5 at night.
The fare hike increase will facilitate the centre to implement KPIs (key performance indicators) and other quality measures on the franchisees to provide world-class taxi services to the residents, tourists and visitors of the emirate, Al Hosani said.
TransAD was formed in 2006 as a result of Decree 19 of 2006 by the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in his capacity as the Ruler of the emirate.
