During the first five months of this year, six people of various nationalities were killed in 54 serious traffic accidents on Ajman roads, a senior officer at the Ajman Police has said. Most of these deaths were caused by runover accidents.
The Ajman traffic police official added that number of deaths caused by traffic accidents has come down by 40 per cent compared to the same period of 2018, which witnessed death of 10 people.
He pointed out that the police are making great efforts to reduce the traffic accidents by intensifying traffic awareness efforts through campaigns, conducting lectures to public and distributing pamphlets and publications.
He added that newly constructed foot bridges, pedestrian crossings and subways on vital roads played a great role in reducing runover accidents. This was supported by intensified police patrols at intersections and crowded streets as well as installation of cameras and smart radars in various parts of the emirate.
The police also deployed patrols in various parts of the emirate and have reduced the speed limit on roads including Shaikh Zayed Road from 100km to 80km.
As part of their awareness efforts, the police also launched a free violation day, when the traffic patrols exempt violators from paying fines, but educate them on the importance of obeying rules.
"More than 40 patrols were deployed during the initiative in the early morning to stop erring motorists, and talk to them about their violation. The patrols were deployed on highways and areas with heavy traffic flow during peak hours," he added.
The Ajman Police have also launched an annual 'golden points' system to reward 10 drivers who don't commit any traffic violation throughout the year. The motorists whose traffic files remain free of any violation until the end of the year will be rewarded with 24 golden points, he said, adding that the initiative has encouraged a large number of motorists to follow traffic rules.
