The Shaml village of Ras Al Khaimah is celebrating the return of UAE serviceman Abdullah Saleh Kharkhor Al Shehi after three months of treatment in Germany. The 35-year-old soldier was seriously injured in a blast in Yemen's Marib Province on September 4 while serving as part of the Saudi-led "Operation Restoring Hope".
Well-wishers, family and friends geared up to welcome the hero at Dubai International Airport on January 6, at 6am. The reception, however, did not end there. Hundreds of well-wishers have been flocking to the soldier's house over the last two days to congratulate him on his return, give him gifts, and take pictures with him.
The happy and proud family also held a lavish banquet to honour the hero's return. "We want everybody to share the happy moments with us," they said. In turn, Abdullah, the soldier, paid tributes to the UAE's prudent leadership and people of the country for their commitment and support of the armed forces, particularly martyrs.
"All leaders have shown exceptional support to the families of UAE martyrs who sacrificed their blood and soul for their beloved country," he said. Saeed Salim, a neighbour of the hero in Shaml area, said the UAE martyrs and injured servicemen are a source of pride to all Emiratis. "We are all prepared to welcome the hero and express our appreciation to his sacrifice," he said. Sultan Al Akizi, a well-wisher from Shaml area, said he took part in the celebration. "It was a good chance to thank Abdullah for his loyalty and sacrifice."
